Mr. James Childress began his military career as a Combat Engineer,
first serving in the United States Army Reserve from 1981-1984 with
the 291st Combat Engineer Battalion. In 1984 he graduated with a
Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University
of North Carolina at Charlotte, was an ROTC Distinguished Military
Graduate and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Corps
of Engineers. He attended the Engineer Officer Basic Course
followed by Ranger School and was assigned to Fort Bragg from
1985-1988 where he served with the 548th Engineer Battalion and the
362nd Combat Support Equipment Company. Following the Engineer
Officer Advanced Course, he was assigned to Panama from 1989-
1992, where he served in a variety of positions including Brigade
Engineer with the 197th Infantry Battalion (ABN), Fort Clayton and as a Company Commander in
the 536th Engineer Battalion (Division Light), Fort Amador. Jim was later assigned to an OSD
Joint Test Activity in Vicksburg, Mississippi until 1995.
Jim began his acquisition career in 1995, attending the Material Acquisition Management Course
at Fort Lee, Virginia followed by an assignment with the TRADOC System Manager, Engineer
Combat Systems, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri where he was responsible for five Countermine
Systems. He next served as an Assistant PM with the Product Manager, Airborne Common
Sensor, Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, then as an Assistant PM for Mine Systems and Acting
Product Manager for Mine Systems, Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey.
From 2002-2006, LTC Childress served as Chief, Special Programs Management Office, Army
Compartmented Element, United States Army Special Operations Command, Fort Bragg, North
Carolina. After retiring from active duty in 2006, Jim began his civilian acquisition career with
the Army Test and Evaluation Command, first as the LNO to the Joint IED Defeat Organization
then as the Deputy G-3/5, Deputy Chief of Staff for Operation and Plans. He joined the Project
Manager Office, Distributed Common Ground System – Army (DCGS-A) in 2011 and in April,
2012 became the Deputy Project Manager for DCGS-A.
Jim Childress received a Master of Science in Engineering Management (concentration in
Operations Research) from the Florida Institute of Technology, Melbourne, Florida and a Master
of Science in National Resource Strategy from the National Defense University. He is a resident
graduate of the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and is a 2016
graduate of the Senior Service College Eisenhower School, Fort McNair, Virginia.
